STARTING CAVEMEN

Main menu screen

When you first load Cavemen you'll see the main menu screen. Tap Play to get straight into the game, or Select Level to replay any level you've already completed. Play loads the level you're currently up to, so each time you load Cavemen you can just tap it to continue from where you left off.

Custom Campaign and Custom Level are for playing extra levels released by Lightworks Games or made with the level editor. Check the Lightworks Games website periodically for news about these features.

Tap Options to change the volume for the music and sound effects in Cavemen. If you find that the volume is too soft even on maximum then increase your device volume outside of Cavemen.

To quit Cavemen just tap Exit. Your progress is automatically saved, so next time just tap Play to continue from where you left off.

PLAYING CAVEMEN

Level introduction screen

Before playing each level you'll see it's introduction screen. This tells you the area name and level number ("Green Fields, Level 1"), name ("No One Gets Past Blockers"), the total cavemen in the level (5), and how many of those must survive (2). When you're ready just tap Play to start the level.

A simple Cavemen level

When each level begins the cavemen will emerge one by one from the entrance cave and walk to the right. It's up to you to give the right abilities to the right cavemen at the right time in order to guide the tribe safely to the exit cave. Simply tap one of the ability buttons at the bottom of the screen and then tap a caveman to give him that ability.

The status bar at the bottom of the game window reports your progress in the level. The first item tells you how many more cavemen will enter the level (2 more, in the above example), the second item tells you how many have reached the exit cave (0 out of 2 needed), and the third item tells you how many cavemen have been lost (0 out of 3 maximum).

Level summary screen

After each level you'll see the summary screen. This has all the information of the introduction screen, but also tells you how many cavemen survived the level. If enough cavemen survived you can tap Next to move on to the next level, otherwise you can tap Replay to try the level again.

If you fail a level four times a Skip button will appear, which you can tap move straight onto the next level.

CONTROLS

A more advanced Cavemen level

The interface at the bottom of the screen has three rows of buttons. The top row is for controlling the level, while the bottom two rows are for the abilities you can give to your cavemen.

The blue arrow buttons on either end of the top row are for scrolling the level left and right. These buttons only appears when a level can be scrolled in their direction, so when you see them you know the level can be scrolled. In addition to tapping the buttons you can also use the directional pad on your Pocket PC for scrolling left and right.

The next button in the top row is a pause button. Use it to freeze the cavemen while you think about how to complete a level. You can also apply abilities to cavemen while the game is paused, so it comes in handy when things get a bit too hectic.

Next to the pause button is the fast forward button. It makes the cavemen move about four times faster, so is great for speeding things up when the cavemen are just walking or digging.

The final button on the top row is the menu button. This pauses the game and brings up the game menu.

The game menu

Tap Back to Game to come straight back into the game, Blow 'em Up to blow up your remaining cavemen (if you already have enough survivors you will still win the level), Quit to Menu to quit the level and go back to the main menu, or Quit Game to quit Cavemen (your progress will be saved automatically).

ABILITIES

Each level will have a different set of obstacles and a limited number of abilities available to you. The puzzle is in figuring out how to use those abilities to avoid all the obstacles and successfully complete the level.

The ability buttons

The buttons in colour represent abilities you can currently use in the level, while the black and white buttons are for abilities not currently available to you. The number on each button tells you how many times you can apply that ability in this level before it runs out.

The abilities, in the order they appear in the game interface (top row left to right, then bottom row left to right), are:

A blocker caveman Blocker
When you turn a caveman into a blocker they will stop in place and act as a barrier to other cavemen, bouncing them back the way they came. Once a caveman is made a blocker he won't be able to get to the exit cave (the only way he'll stop blocking is if you explode him!).
A digger caveman Digger
As soon as you make a caveman into a digger he will begin digging straight down until he runs out of dirt, then he'll start walking normally again. All types of digging cavemen can only dig through dirt, not stone or water.
A tunneller caveman Tunneller
Tunneller is like digger, but the caveman won't begin tunnelling until he reaches a wall. When he does reach a wall he'll keep tunnelling sideways until he runs out of dirt, then he'll start walking normally again. Tunnellers can dig both to the left and the right.
A burrower caveman Burrower
Like digger, the burrower will begin burrowing diagonally downwards the instant you give him the ability. He'll keep burrowing until he runs out of dirt and then return to walking normally. Burrowers can dig both to the left and the right.
A mountain climber caveman Mountain Climber
Mountain climber doesn't run out after one use like most other abilities. A caveman with the mountain climber ability will climb straight up any wall he runs into for the remainder of the level.
A parachutist caveman Parachutist
When a parachutist walks off a tall cliff he'll open up his parachute and float safely to the ground. You can even give the parachutist ability to a caveman who's already falling to save him in the nick of time! Be careful though, each parachute can only be used once.
A glider caveman Glider
A glider ability will get out his hang-glider at the next cliff he reaches and soar through the air, but once he's landed he loses his glider and will fall off the next cliff just like anyone else!
A jumper caveman Jumper
When you give a caveman the jumper ability he will immediately jump forwards, so make sure you time it correctly!
A thrower caveman Thrower
Like blocker, throwers are stuck in place and won't be able to make it to the exit cave. Any cavemen who walk into the thrower will be hurled forwards through the air, so it's a great way to sacrifice one caveman to get the rest safely past an obstacle.
A sling shooter caveman Sling Shooter
Occasionally a dinosaur will block the path of the cavemen, and only a sling shooter can help. A sling shooter will immediately throw a stone which, if timed correctly, will hit the dinosaur's head and knock it out. If timed incorrectly the stone could miss completely, or even worse hit the dinosaur but send it crashing down to crush any cavemen near it!
A strongman caveman Strongman
Trees block the path of all cavemen except strongmen, who will push over the next tree they find so that the whole tribe and can get past it. Pushing a tree over takes all of a strongman's strength, so at the next tree he'll be blocked just like regular caveman.
An exploder caveman Exploder
Any caveman can be given the exploder ability at any time (including blockers and throwers). As soon as the ability is applied a five second countdown begins, and when it reaches zero the caveman explodes and blows away an oval of dirt. It may not be realistic, but it sure is fun!

OBSTACLES

A falling caveman
A caveman walking into lava
Terrain
If your cavemen fall from too great a height they'll splat into the ground, so be sure to keep them away from dangerous cliffs (or give them the glider and parachutist abilities). Pools of water or lava are also lethal to cavemen if they fall into them, so look for other ways past these.
Venus Flytrap Deadly Traps
Venus flytraps, carnivorous ant hills and spurting flames are all deadly to the cavemen, so when you spot one you'll need to start looking for a way around it. There's no way to stop a deadly trap, but there are lots of ways to avoid them.
A pushable tree Trees
Trees usually teeter on the edge of cliffs, where they can be pushed over by cavemen with the strongman ability to form a convenient bridge. Whenever you see a tree you need to figure out how to get a strongman caveman to run into it.
A dinosaur Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs block your path, but they won't harm your cavemen so don't be afraid of getting up close. A well-timed shot with a sling shooter can knock a dino out so the cavemen can get past it (just aim for the head!), so when you see one you just need to figure out how to make the shot. Be careful, though, because when the dino falls he can squash any cavemen underneath him!

BONUSES

A present Presents
You start each level with limited abilities, and sometimes they aren't enough to get you through it. Presents contain extra abilities, you just need to figure out how to get one of your cavemen to grab the present and get the abilities for you.

HINTS AND TIPS

Level Name Riddles
The name of a level often contains a hint on how to complete it, so if you're stuck see if the level's name reveals anything.

Look At Your Abilities
You'll almost always use every ability you have in order to complete a level, so take a good look at the abilities you have and think about where you could use each of them.

Open Your Presents
If you're stuck on a level with presents then the first thing on your mind should be how to get them! Presents give you new abilities which you'll need in order to get through the level.

Got Dinosaur Worries?
Whenever you're having trouble sling shooting a dinosaur it's best to remember that the ability is meant to be used from far away, so you don't get squashed by the falling dino! The stones travel far, so don't be afraid to try shooting from further back or even from up high.

Can't Beat 'Em?
Skip 'em! If you just can't figure out a level then you do have the option to skip it. After four failures a Skip button will appear on the level summary screen, and you can tap that to move straight onto the next level.
